The Key to Scoring Points: Fixing Common Mistakes

Scoring points on your serve is arguably the most important skill for winning more games in pickleball. However, if you're struggling to get from the baseline to the kitchen after your serve or you're constantly on defense, you're likely missing out on scoring streaks and losing more games than necessary. Fortunately, there are six common mistakes that are causing this issue, and they're super easy to fix, making a massive difference in your game.

1. Getting Stuck at the Baseline

One of the biggest mistakes players make is getting trapped at the back of the court and being unable to effectively move forward without losing control of the point. To address this, use the traffic light system: green light for low balls, yellow light for mid-height balls, and red light for high balls. Move forward based on the height of the ball immediately after you hit it, rather than waiting to see where it lands. This proactive approach allows you to get into position faster and more effectively.

2. Serving Without a Strategy

Walking up to serve without a plan means you're at the mercy of your performance and your opponents' actions. Always approach the line with a vague plan, using either coordinated plays or an improvisational framework. Coordinated plays, such as serving down the middle followed by an aggressive drop, provide a structured approach. Improvisation allows you to respond to your opponents' shots with a flexible but strategic mindset.

3. Misusing Plays

Not all plays work against every opponent. The third mistake is not knowing when and against whom to use certain plays. Assess your opponents' weaknesses and adapt your strategies accordingly. For example, use the shake and bake play if your opponents struggle with fast drives. If they're good at returning drives, switch to a different strategy to minimize risk.

4. Lack of an Improv Strategy

At higher levels, improvisation becomes crucial. Players often struggle because they don't follow a strict formula for their improvised shots. Develop a formula based on the type of returns you receive: use drives for short, high returns and drops for deeper, more challenging returns. Adjust your strategy based on your opponents' responses to maintain control of the point.

5. Poor Positioning

Getting into the right position is essential for executing your shots effectively. Most players underestimate the importance of footwork. Ensure you're in the perfect spot before hitting the ball, with your body balanced and ready. This involves taking small adjustment steps immediately after your serve to optimize your positioning.

6. Not Moving in Tandem with Your Partner

The sixth mistake is failing to move in sync with your partner. Always maintain a close distance to your partner to cover the court effectively. Move forward together using the traffic light system and adjust your positioning based on your partner's movements. The only exception is the shake and bake, which requires a different approach.

By addressing these six common mistakes, you'll improve your ability to score points on your serve and enhance your overall game strategy.
