A New Pickleball Documentary Series Sheds Light on Arizona’s Competitive League

The Arizona Pickleball League has taken center stage in a new docuseries, “Breaking Pickleball,” now streaming on Amazon Prime. This six-episode series offers an in-depth look at the Scottsdale-based league’s inaugural Spring 2023 season, following five competitive teams: The Scottsdale Scorchers, Gilbert Gladiators, Peoria Pythons, Tempe Tornadoes, and Surprise Stinger. The series captures the intense journey of each team as they battle through the regular season and playoffs, culminating in the Orchard Championship Cup. “Breaking Pickleball” is not just a documentary about the sport but a heartfelt exploration of the determination and passion driving these players to be the best.

The Arizona Pickleball League, housed at The Orchard at Jigsaw Health’s indoor venue in Scottsdale, has garnered significant attention, with live-streamed matches attracting 10,000 viewers worldwide. The league’s unique approach, featuring elements like rubber chickens, glow sticks, and pyrotechnics, has set it apart from traditional pickleball matches, making it a spectacle in its own right. According to co-founder Patrick Sullivan Jr., these matches have redefined what viewers expect from the sport, showcasing the league’s innovative spirit and dedication to entertainment.

As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, Arizona has become a central hub for the sport. The national governing body, USA Pickleball, is moving its headquarters to Scottsdale, and a massive new facility is under construction to house the U.S. national team. The success of “Breaking Pickleball” and the Arizona Pickleball League highlights the state’s pivotal role in the sport’s future, offering a glimpse into the competitive and entertaining world of professional pickleball.
